Nose
- Supported by bone and cartilage
- Air enters through the two nostrils and then enters the nasal cavity
- Guarded by internal hair, which prevent entry of large particles
Nasal Cavity
- Hollow space behind the nose
- Divided into right and left portions by the nasal septum
- Further divided into passageways by bones and bone processes curling out from lateral walls
- Mucous membranes line the nasal cavity and its function are to heat the air and moisten the air
Paranasal Sinuses
- Air-filled spaces within the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid bones of the skull
- Lined with mucous membranes
- Resonant chambers that affect the quality of the voice
Pharynx (Throat)
- Located behind the oral cavity, nasal cavity, and the larynx
- Passageway for both food and air
