Skeletal System
In the human body there are 206 bones, all of which give shape to structures. Bones provide protection and support. Another purpose is locomotion, meaning that the bones and muscles interact as levers to allow limbs and other body parts to move.
Another important function of bones is that they store inorganic salts. Bones store calcium salts in their extracellular matrix. They also maintain sufficient blood calcium levels which is very important for muscle contraction, blood clotting, nerve impulses, etc. When accidentally ingested, harmful metallic elements are also accumulated in the bones such as lead, radium, etc.
To learn the basic bones of the body, the types of joints, and different bone classification, view the PowerPoint below the skeleton, provided by www.iteachbio.com
