- Nail plate overlies the nail bed
- Lunula is a whitish, thickened half-moon shaped region at the base of the nail
- Nails protect the ends of the
- the hair root is in the dermis and contains the hair follicle
- As new cells grow, the older cells are pushed towards the surface of the skin and become keratinized and die
- The remains make up the hair shaft
- Arrector pili muscles, bundles of smooth muscle, are attached to each hair follicle
- When the muscles are contracted, the hair stands up
