Fractures
A fracture is any break in the bone. It is classified by the cause, and the nature of the break. Fractures can either be open (compound) or closed (simple) or can be complete or incomplete. There are many types of fractures:
Stress Fracture
- Tiny cracks in the bone
- Caused by repetitive application of force
- Is most common in weight-bearing bones of the lower leg/foot
- The constant pounding of the lower leg/foot and cause tiny fractures in the bone
Greenstick Fracture
- A fracture in which the bones cracks, but does not break completely
- Most commonly found in children because their skeletons are more flexible than adult skeletons
- Most commonly found in arms
Transverse Fracture
- Occurs perpendicular to axis of the bone
- A complete Fracture
Oblique Fracture
- A complete fracture
- Occurs at an angle other than a right angle to the axis of the bone
